In this brief guide, we aim to provide a concise yet comprehensive overview of all the essential aspects of obtaining Turkish citizenship. What Does Turkish Citizenship Mean?

Citizenship represents the bundle of legal and social rights and responsibilities that an individual holds through their official tie to a country. In other words, once you obtain Turkish citizenship, you gain access to full privileges such as voting rights, social services, employment rights, and political representation. In return, you accept certain civic obligations to the nation, including paying taxes, adhering to laws and regulations, and contributing to the country’s security and development.

In short, after obtaining Turkish citizenship, you are officially a Turkish national. You enjoy every single privilege of a local citizen while committing to the country’s legal frameworks.

Acquiring Turkish citizenship is significantly faster and more straightforward compared to many other nations—provided you meet the necessary criteria.

What Are the Benefits of Obtaining Turkish Citizenship?

I often hear people say that Turkey is only good for vacations and leisure, claiming it’s not suitable for long-term living or questioning the actual value of a Turkish passport. Let me share some of the core advantages of acquiring Turkish citizenship, and then you can judge for yourself.

1- No More Visa Worries!

Expats living in Turkey on tourist or work visas know firsthand that visa renewals come with immense stress, especially since Turkish visa regulations change every few months! However, once you secure citizenship, those worries completely disappear. You can travel back to your home country whenever you like and return home to Turkey knowing your life, property, and business are perfectly secure—without anyone asking you for documentation at the border.

iHomes handles the entire process for you—from initial visa acquisition to permanent residency and ultimate citizenship. You won’t have to worry about a thing!

2- Access to Full Constitutional Rights

Even if you manage to renew your tourist or work visa without any hassle, you will still be excluded from many local benefits. As a Turkish citizen, however, you can easily secure credit cards and buy anything on installment plans—whether it’s the latest cars, real estate, home appliances, or even day-to-day groceries.

3- Visa-Free and Facilitated Travel to 120 Countries

By obtaining a Turkish passport, you gain hassle-free travel access to 120 countries worldwide, including European nations, South American countries, Kuwait, Oman, Russia, Malaysia, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, and more.

With a Turkish passport, you can travel to 72 countries completely visa-free!

You might wonder if the ability to travel easily is really worth focusing so heavily on Turkish citizenship.

The truth is, it’s not just about leisure travel. As a Turkish national, you can legally work or invest in these global destinations. Furthermore, you and your children can seamlessly leverage this status to pursue educational or career relocation to highly developed nations, such as the United States!

The Process of Obtaining Turkish Citizenship

While the process of securing Turkish citizenship is highly accessible, Turkish immigration laws have their own intricate nuances. It is absolutely vital to have an experienced firm handle your application with precision. The iHomes team manages the entire process from start to finish using our licensed legal team. Before getting started, it is helpful to understand the general workflow.

1- Selecting Your Citizenship Pathway

There are several main avenues to qualify for a Turkish passport. We will briefly outline each option below. Generally, there are 3 primary routes:

■ Capital Investment (e.g., Real Estate Purchase)

■ Holding a Legal Work Permit for a Minimum of 5 Years

■ Marriage to a Turkish Citizen

2- Commencement of Legal Proceedings by iHomes

Once you select your preferred pathway, it’s time to initiate the administrative and legal steps. At iHomes, we employ experienced Turkish attorneys. Thanks to our strong institutional relationships across various governmental departments, we execute every phase of your application from A to Z with absolute security and precision. Keep in mind that there are numerous regulatory technicalities you might not be aware of, which could expose you to fraud or unnecessary delays if handled alone.

3- Final Government Review and Approval

Following the submission and processing of your application, a final background and document assessment is conducted by national authorities. Upon approval, your Turkish citizenship is officially granted. This review cycle typically takes between 3 to 9 months, depending on your individual circumstances and chosen pathway.

Methods to Acquire Turkish Citizenship

So, what are the exact ways to qualify for Turkish citizenship? Let me break down the 3 core methods, each offering its own unique advantages.

Turkish Citizenship via Real Estate Investment

By purchasing a property with a minimum value of $400,000, you can secure your Turkish citizenship and passport within just a few months—simple as that! While you could alternatively register a company, launch a highly profitable business, and qualify for citizenship that way, that route comes with its own operational maintenance hurdles. Consequently, real estate investment remains far more cost-effective and, without a doubt, much more straightforward!
If you purchase one or multiple properties in Turkey with a combined value exceeding $400,000, you qualify to obtain Turkish citizenship. For instance, you can buy 4 properties valued at $100,000 each to meet the $400,000 threshold. Please note that any property acquired under this scheme cannot be sold for a period of 3 years.

  • The property’s title deed history must not show any prior sale to a foreign national.
  • The selected property must not have been previously utilized by anyone else to secure Turkish citizenship.
  • Properties purchased under specific government subsidy or discount programs are strictly ineligible for the citizenship program.

How is the property value calculated? The property undergoes an official appraisal by a certified expert from the Property Assessment Department. Using a standardized procedure and specific valuation formulas, they determine the actual market value of the property and issue an official report (Appraisal Report / Ekspertiz). Currently, the Turkish government exclusively benchmarks evaluations based on reports issued by the GEDAŞ appraisal company.

Getting Turkish Citizenship Through Financial Investment

Capital investment stands out as the most streamlined and hassle-free pathway to securing permanent residency and citizenship in Turkey. To qualify through this route, you must deposit a minimum of $500,000 in a Turkish bank for a fixed period of three years. These funds must originate from foreign sources and be injected from outside Turkey. The source of wealth must be fully transparent, as any form of money laundering is strictly prohibited.

This method is ideal for individuals who prefer not to deal with real estate acquisition, company formation, or complex paperwork, allowing them to secure citizenship directly through a straightforward financial asset allocation.

Getting Turkish Citizenship Through Marriage

Another pathway to acquiring a Turkish passport is by marrying a Turkish citizen. However, the caveat is that you must remain married for at least 3 years before becoming eligible to apply, making this residency type somewhat conditional and high-risk. Drawing from our years of experience in Turkey, we generally do not recommend relying solely on this route due to its extensive administrative hurdles; its only real advantage is that it requires minimal capital, though the process itself remains highly demanding.

If you marry a Turkish national (regardless of gender) and maintain a genuine marital relationship for 3 years, you can apply for citizenship. This 3-year period must reflect a genuine cohabitation, not a sham marriage for immigration purposes. This means you must not have divorced or lived separately during this timeframe. In fact, officers from the Civil Registry (Nüfus) may conduct neighborhood background checks to verify your shared living arrangements, or conduct separate, in-depth interviews regarding your spouse’s personal preferences and lifestyle.

Turkish Citizenship Through Long-Term Residency

If you continuously and legally reside and work in Turkey for 5 consecutive years, you become eligible to submit a citizenship application. Crucially, during this 5-year period, your total time spent outside Turkey must not exceed 6 months (180 days). If your cumulative absences exceed this limit, your 5-year clock resets to zero, and you must start the qualifying period all over again. Upon completing 5 years of residency, you must demonstrate a healthy bank history, a clean criminal record, and a stable, sustainable employment background to prove you can fully support yourself and your dependents in Turkey.

Please note that this 5-year residency must be accumulated via a legal lease, property ownership, or a valid work permit. Even then, approval is never guaranteed and remains highly dependent on the absolute discretion of the Directorate General of Migration Management.

For career-based relocation, you must secure a valid work permit (Çalışma İzni) that has been renewed without interruption for at least 5 years and remains active. The standard framework requires a registered Turkish company to officially employ you and sponsor your work permit.

Turkish Citizenship via Birth (Jus Sanguinis)

Many people mistakenly assume that giving birth to a child in a foreign country automatically grants the child citizenship. This is a common misconception, as only about 34 countries worldwide adhere strictly to *jus soli* (the right of the soil). *Jus soli* means that any child born within the country’s physical territory automatically becomes a citizen. Over 90% of these nations are located in North and South America, such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, etc. In Asia, only Pakistan grants citizenship based purely on birth location; Turkey does not operate under this framework.

In Turkey, citizenship by birth is based on *jus sanguinis* (the right of blood), meaning the child must be born to at least one parent who holds Turkish citizenship. However, as an exception, if a child is born within Turkey to unidentified parents, the state automatically grants Turkish nationality for humanitarian protection.

Acquiring Turkish Citizenship via Exceptional Merit

Like many nations globally, the Turkish government may grant exceptional citizenship to individuals based on the unique value they bring to the country. This includes outstanding artists, elite scientists, or world-class athletes, allowing Turkey to benefit from their achievements on the global stage. Exceptional citizenship may also be granted under unique humanitarian circumstances, such as providing special political asylum.

When you successfully secure Turkish citizenship or nationality, the benefits extend beyond yourself; your spouse and all dependent children under the age of 17 will officially become Turkish citizens as well. Yes, you read that correctly—under 17 years old.
